My Teaching

DSC00607.JPG

"Education does not change the world. Education changes people, and people change the world."

-Paulo Freire

Core pedagogical characteristics include the encouragement of:

  • Rigor and students' achievement of high standards

  • Democratic knowledge production

  • Critical self- and social reflection

  • Active engagement with and application of content

  • Socio-cultural learning and collaboration with peers

I have taught internationally for 22 years, with 20 of these at the undergraduate university level, to highly diverse multilingual and multicultural student populations. Coming from a tradition of critical education, I believe in liberatory education as well as the potential for education to contribute to the progressive transformation of society. Hallmark characteristics of my pedagogy include the encouragement of a core set of pedagogical characteristics (summarized in bullets to the left) which are suited for the cultivation of empowered, empathetic, and ethical citizens in a multicultural and globalized world.

I focus on holistic educational development, which means simultaneously attending to a student's social, emotional, physical, mental, and intellectual growth. With a focus on inclusiveness, I apply multi-level instructional practices to provide accessibility to students of varying lingua-cultural and educational backgrounds.

All students are welcomed and well supported in my courses, but those who find the most success demonstrate a certain collection of qualities that I refer to as "The 7 Cs":

  • Curiosity

  • Courage

  • Commitment

  • Consistency

  • Compassion

  • Communication

  • Connections

Student Comments

"Due to the pandemic, the past year has been extremely tough and challenging. However, I am so glad that I eventually went with my guts and take [your] classes this semester. Before taking your classes, I thought coming to SILS is the worst decision I have made in my life. And I am not fully satisfied with my study abroad experience in Japan. However, the reading materials and discussion with my peers have led me to realize how much I have benefited from my four years of study at Waseda, giving me positive energy to move forward to the next stage of life.

Your classes meant a lot to me...I want to say that I appreciate our conversation and your help with my study. You are one of the most responsible and nice professors I met at Waseda University and throughout my life...Thank you for everything."
